Down Syndrome Foundation Canada Launches "Building Our Future" Project

Posted on September 1, 2025

Here at the Down Syndrome Foundation, we believe in a future where every individual has the opportunity to contribute their unique talents and find meaningful employment. That's why we are absolutely thrilled to announce a groundbreaking initiative set to launch this Labour Day, September 1st, 2025: the "Building Our Future: Skills Development Project."

This is a training program designed to tackle two significant challenges facing our province right now. Firstly, Ontario's low-rise construction sector is demand for skilled labour. Secondly, we know that many talented individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) are eager to work but often face barriers to securing fulfilling jobs.

"Building Our Future," developed in partnership with Ontario's Ministry of Labour, is designed to bridge this gap. We're introducing a brand new role: "Supported Co-Workers." These individuals, trained through our comprehensive program, will provide invaluable assistance to skilled tradespeople, handling minor, time-consuming tasks. Imagine the efficiency! Tradespeople can focus on their specialized craft, knowing they have dedicated support. This not only boosts productivity across the board but also creates vital, empowering employment for individuals with IDD.

We've developed an extensive training course that covers essential employ-ability skills alongside discrete job-specific competencies. Our dedicated trainers will utilize effective learning methodologies in both classroom and real-world job-site environments. This hands-on approach ensures our Supported Co-Workers are well-prepared and confident in their new roles.

It's about empowering individuals, strengthening our workforce, and building a more inclusive Ontario. We envision a future where our model can be replicated across various skilled trade sectors, creating a ripple effect of opportunity and efficiency.
